The Atlanta Dream ended their two-game skid with a victory over the Connecticut Sun by the score of 93-87 on Sunday afternoon at Philips Arena.

Here are a few notes from Sunday’s game:

Dream Overcome Early Deficit to Earn Close Victory Over the Sun

  • The Dream overcame an early eight-point deficit and held on in the end to pick a victory over the Sun.
  • Sunday’s victory extends the Dream’s winning streak over the Sun to four. They are also now 2-0 this season against the Sun.
  • The Atlanta Dream saw four players reach double figures in points during Sunday’s victory: Elizabeth Williams led all players with a game high 20 points, Layshia Clarendon scored 19 points, Angel McCoughtry scored 18 points, and Meighan Simmons scored 10 points off the bench.
  • Coach Cooper’s Take: “It’s good to bounce back with-not a pretty win, but just a win. I thought it was a gutsy win. I think our defense has gotten better, and I thought we were patient on offense and doing our execution. A wins, a wins, a win as long as you stop the streak of losing”
  • Player’s Take: I believe losing is contagious the same way winning is contagious. We just brought it today, didn’t have a lull, and played with a chip on our shoulder because losing two in a row is not awesome”, said Clarendon after the win.

 

Three Key Statistics Sunday’s Victory

  • The Dream scored 56 points in the paint. The Dream are now 5-2 when they out score their opponents in the paint.
  • The Dream won the rebounding battle 34-32. The Dream are now 4-2 when out-rebounding their opponent.
  • The Dream scored 93 total points as a team. The Dream are now 2-0 when they score 90 or more points.

 

Elizabeth is On Fire

  • Elizabeth Williams posted her first game with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds as well as notching the first double-double of her young career.
  • Williams Has now scored 20 or more points in two of the last three games.
  • The WNBA’s leader in blocked shots continued her impressive run of defense. Williams finished with three more blocked shots against Connecticut. She has now tallied two or more blocks in six of nine games this season and seven of the last eight overall.

 

McCoughtry Keeps Streak Alive

  • With her 17-point performance in Sunday’s win, McCoughtry has now recorded double-figures in 25 straight games.
  • McCoughtry ranks second among scoring leaders in the WNBA (20.2 points per game)

 

Clarendon On Tear

  • Clarendon tied her career high with 19 points against Connecticut.
  • She has now scored double-figure points in seven of nine games since joining the Dream.

 

 A Glance At The Standings

  • The Dream remain atop the Eastern Conference Standings with a record of 7-3. Their 7-3 record also remains the third best in the WNBA. The currently hold a 1.5 game edge over the second place New York Liberty.

 

 Player of the Game: Elizabeth Williams

Williams had a huge game on Sunday. She finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots. Williams also played big in the clutch with six points, three rebounds and all three of her blocked shots coming in the fourth quarter. Her play on both sides of the ball was key in the Dream’s victory over Connecticut.
