Dream Overseas Report - Oct. 13
If you’ve been watching the WNBA over the weekend you’ve saw a thrilling Game 4 where the Indiana Fever beat the Minnesota Lynx to take the championship into a deciding Game 5 on Wednesday. However, women’s pro basketball doesn’t end this week – you can follow your favorite players overseas! In this week’s Dream Overseas Report, get up to date with how Atlanta Dream players are doing in other countries during the off-season.
Matee Ajavon
(Energa Torun, Poland)
Ajavon has now made it overseas to Poland and was ready to play on Saturday as winless Torun traveled to Widzew. Energa Torun with Ajavon’s help got its first win of the season 80-61 to move up to 1-3. She had 18 points and 10 assists in the win but her teammate Victoria Maucalay had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead both teams. Maucalay, a 2013 graduate from Temple, played four games for the Chicago Sky this season.

Cierra Burdick
(Napoli, Italy)
The box score and details are down in the Angel McCoughtry update, but Burdick and her Napoli team were steamrollered by the USA National Team as the two squads clashed during the Team USA’s October European Tour. Napoli was on the wrong end of an 86-50 score. Burdick had three points and six rebounds, shooting 1-for-7 from the floor fighting against a team of WNBA All-Stars. Teammate Gintare Pertonyte had more luck with 15 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
On Sunday, Napoli traveled to Vigarano where Napoli won 79-67. Napoli was down by eight points at halftime but came back to more or less tie it in the third and hold Vigarano to just five fourth quarter points. Gintare Perotnyte led Napoli with 33 points and 21 rebounds. Burdick shot 1-for-8 from the field for just four points but had eight rebounds.

Sydney Carter
(TTT Riga, Latvia)
TTT Riga opened the 2015-16 Eurocup competition by hitting the road and taking on the Flying Foxes in Austria as part of a two-game qualifier to see which of the two teams will take part in the main competitions. These two teams are the only ones that need to play in a qualifier, which consists of playing two games where the best aggregate score moves forward.
The visitors had a bit of trouble with a comeback from the Flying Foxes in the second quarter but TTT Riga outscored the home team 85-57 to take Game One. Carter had 17 points and seven assists for the Latvians and her teammate Kristen Mann (remember her?) had 21 points to lead all players on both teams. The rematch will be in Riga, Latvia on October 15.

Carla Cortijo
(Gigantes de Carolina, Puerto Rico)
We now know why Cortijo didn’t play during the loss to last place Ponce. According to the Asi von los Deportes Facebook page, she had a “swelling of the floor of the foot” according to Facebook’s translate function.
Cortijo was back with her Gigantes team on Thursday, October 8 and had a big game on the road against Santurce, winning 89-68. She came very close to a triple double with eight points, eight rebounds and nine assists but only played22 minutes. Marissa Kastanek, a graduate of North Carolina State, led Gigantes with 18 points.
It was also the first game with a new coach for Gigantes, Carlos Calcaño. The previous coach, Jorge Otera, was dismissed after the loss to Ponce. It was reported in Presencia that Club director Orlando Rosa felt that the team was not responding to Otera .
On Sunday the team went on the road to play Morovis, a team that has Tamera Young of the Chicago Sky on their roster. Gigantes won 79-63 and boosted its record to 9-2. Both teams shot poorly and Cortijo only had six points in the first half but 18 in the second to finish with 24 points. Young finished with 19 points.

Damiris Dantas
(Corinthians/American, Brazil)
The LBF (Liga de Basquete Femenino) schedule has not been finalized yet. Last year play went from November through April. Jennifer Lacy joined the Corinthians/American squad as of October 1. The team was formerly called ADCF Unimed/Americana, but changed its name. Corinthians doesn’t provide money but provides the name and the status that comes with it.
Clarissa dos Santos of the Chicago Sky will also be joining Dantas at Corinthians. Corinthians has a game of some sort scheduled for October 16.

Reshanda Gray:
(Battipaglia, Italy)
Gray’s team in Italy continues to struggle, losing to Orvieto 67-54. She fought hard in the second quarter to close within one point of the visitors at halftime, but Orvieto was just too much for the young Battipaglia squad. She had 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead her team.

Tiffany Hayes
(Yakin Dogu, Turkey)
Hayes’s adventure in Turkey illustrates part of the problem overseas. Her Yakin Dogu team was scheduled to head to Ankara this past weekend, but the bombing of a political demonstration on Saturday made news worldwide.
Before the start of the regular season on October 17, the teams of the Turkish League began the opening round of the Women’s Basketball Cup tournament in which 12 of the 14 teams are taking place. The 12 teams have been divided into three groups of four teams, and Hayes’s Yakin Dogu squad and Aneika Henry’s Mersin squad are in the same group, Group A.
On the 8, Yakin Dogu faced Mersin and won 84-62. Hayes’s teammate Kelsey Bone led all scorers on both teams with 19 points and 10 rebounds with Hayes adding 14 points. Yakin Dogu would shoot 55 percent in that game.
On the 9, Yakin Dogu led Edirne 29-11 after the first quarter and weren’t seriously challenged in a 77-70 win. Alyssa Thomas scored 23 points and nine rebounds for Yakin Dogu in the win. Kelsey Bone had 16 points, Ana Dabovic had 10 and Hayes had eight points. Edirne’s only name player is Ivory Latta who had 18 points.
Henry had its final Group A game scheduled on the 11, but due to the bombings the game against Adana ASKI has been moved to the 13.

Aneika Henry
(Mersin, Turkey)
As you can read above in the Tiffany Hayes entry, Henry’s Mersin’s team lost their opening round Turkish Cup game to Yakin Dogu 84-62. Bria Hartley led Mersin with 14 points in the loss. Henry had six points and 11 rebounds.
On the 9, Mersin lost their second game in Group A. The 88-74 loss to Adana ASKI saw Henry with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Bria Hartley with 21 points/4 rebounds/6 assists but without much help from their teammates. As the top two teams from each group advance, it was looking very bad for Mersin.
The third Group A game for Mersin was moved to Tuesday due to the bombings in Ankara.

Sancho Lyttle
(UMMC Ekaterinburg, Russia)
On October 6 and 7, Lyttle’s team took part in an event in Belgium called the Supercup, a four team single-elimination tournament consisting of last season’s Euroleague and Eurocup finalists.
Last year, UMMC were the Euroleague runners-up and they took on Eurocup winner Villeneuve from France in the semifinals. (This would be the equivalent of last year’s NCAA women’s basketball semifinalist Notre Dame taking on WNIT champion UCLA.) UMMC won that game 86-52 with little trouble, led by Lyttle with 23 points and 10 rebounds. They moved on the next day to face USK Praha, the Czech Republic team that upset UMMC last year in Euroleague.
There, they had a tougher time of it, down 48-47 at halftime. The game remained tight until the last moments when USK Praha acquisition Marta Xargay hit a critical triple to put USK Praha up 92-89 with 1:20 to go and with Kristi Toliver and Diana Taurasi both missing shots for UMMC. USK Praha would get a 93-91 victory to take the Supercup. Lyttle would score 11 points and 13 rebounds and Taurasi would lead all players on both teams with 28 points.
On October 11, UMMC resumed domestic league play and moved to 2-0 on the season with a 94-59 walloping of MBA-Dynamo. Sandrine Gruda led all UMMC players with 24 points and Diana Taurasi had 23. Lyttle scored 11 points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes of play.

Angel McCoughtry
(US National Team)
The USA women’s basketball team would play three games in three days finishing their tour of Europe and had no trouble with the Italian national team, winning 79-66 on October 7 in Rome with five USA players scoring in double digits. McCoughtry led all players on both teams with 19 points and five rebounds in just 25 minutes of play.
The following day, the USA women faced Cierra Burdick, Noelle Quinn and other players from the Napoli team in the Italian Serie A domestic league. That game ended in a lopsided 86-50 victory for Team USA in a game where the Americans led 32-6 after the first quarter. Brittney Griner led all players with 15 points, with McCoughtry scoring five points in 16 minutes of play.
On October 10 the USA Women faced USK Praha, which had recently beaten a UMMC team that had players like Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner. But the USA made short work of the Czech pro squad, winning 85-53. McCoughtry scored 15 points in 24 minutes of play, and her teammate Candace Parker scored 20 points and 11 rebounds despite seven turnovers.
