Carla Cortijo Joins Active Training Camp Roster

Dream waive veteran Kara Braxton

ATLANTA (April 27, 2016) – The Atlanta Dream have added guard Carla Cortijo to the active training camp roster and released veteran center Kara Braxton, it was announced Wednesday.

Cortijo was signed by the Dream late last season and became the first Puerto Rican-born player in WNBA history.  The 5-8 point guard averaged 7.0 points over the two contests while shooting .556 from the field.

She was the captain and starting point guard for the Puerto Rico National Team at the 2015 Pan American Games, where she posted averages of 19.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists over three contests.  Her best effort came against the United States as she recorded 24 points and five assists.

Cortijo played professionally in Puerto Rico this offseason and guided Gigantes de Carolina to a win in the best-of-seven BSNF Championship series.  She dropped a team-best 36 points in clinching game four victory to complete a sweep of the series.

Braxton, a 6-6 post player, was originally drafted out of the University of Georgia as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft by the Detroit Shock.  The 10-year WNBA veteran last played in the league during the 2014 season with New York and was a fixture on the Liberty’s roster from 2011-14.  She has averaged 7.6 points and 4.7 rebounds over 297 career games.

Most recently playing overseas in China for Liaoning Hengye, Braxton led the squad with an average of 23.7 points and 8.9 rebounds while shooting a solid .556 (260-for-459) from the field.

Atlanta resumes training camp practices on Thursday, April 28 (9-11 a.m. & 5-7 p.m.) at the Riverside EpiCenter.
