Dream Heads to WNBA Finals After Sweeping Liberty

For the first time since 2013, the Dream are in the WNBA Finals.

The Atlanta Dream beat the New York Liberty 85-83 on Friday in Barclays Center, completing the semifinals sweep.

“We put a lot of work in for this moment,” Angel Reese said. “We can’t shy away from knowing that.”

The final quarter of the game proved crucial, with neither team taking more than a six-point lead. With a minute left, the Liberty got within two of Atlanta’s lead, 83-81. Both teams then struggled to maintain possession of the ball, before New York called a timeout with 18 seconds left. Out of the timeout, the Liberty got a clean look for two points, but failed to convert, and Dewanna Bonner grabbed the board, and was immediately fouled. She made both of her free throws, putting Atlanta up 85-81.

New York’s Breanna Stewart hit a buzzer-beater put back, but it was too little too late, and Atlanta closed out the victory.

“We feel really great that we were able to make the last couple of plays,” Atlanta Head Coach Karl Smesko said. “I’m really proud of the way our players competed, pulled together, and held on towin.”

Reese led the attack with 22 points and 9 rebounds, and Rhyne Howard had 21 points. Jordin Canada had 19 points and 11 assists, her second double-digit assist game of the postseason. Bonner had 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Isobel Borlase had 10 off the bench.

Atlanta got off to a hot start in the first quarter, powered by 11 points from Howard and 10 points from Reese, her first postseason double-digit quarter. Canada had five assists. Atlanta persisted throughout the half, taking a 44-39 lead.

Atlanta started strong in the third quarter, taking a 12-point lead early, but New York responded with a 10-0 run. Canada came up big, scoring nine straight points down the stretch. Both teams swapped single-possession leads the remainder of the quarter, and New York held a 68-66 lead heading into the decisive final quarter.

The best-of-seven Finals series will begin October 17.
