Event dedicated to the legacy of Coretta Scott King on what would have been her 95th birthday
ATLANTA, GA (April 28, 2022) – The Atlanta Dream hosted its inaugural Tip-Off Celebration Wednesday evening, a special night dedicated to re-introducing the team to the city and celebrating a new era for the franchise. The event was dedicated to the legacy of Coretta Scott King on what would have been her 95th birthday.
The team was named by in 2007 by community vote from the city of Atlanta, after Martin Luther King, Jr’s “I have a Dream” speech. “Living into Dr. King’s values is a privilege and a responsibility that we take er seriously” said Atlanta Dream president, Morgan Shaw Parker. “In that same spirit, it is with great intention that we are all gathered here today to introduce the team and honor Mrs. King – a civil rights leader and an advocate for equality, as well as the woman who carried on Dr. King’s legacy. She is the true embodiment of what all of us aspire to be in Atlanta.”
During the event, Dream players and coaches were formally introduced to key members of the Atlanta community, Dream partners, as well as prominent members of Atlanta’s sports, tech, and entertainment industries.
The event was hosted by Emmy-award winning journalist, Rose Scott, and the Dream’s in-game host, Bria Janelle. The evening also featured musical performances by renowned Atlanta musical artists, Melvin Miller, and the local choirs, Antwoin Holman and Trans4mation, together performing a special rendition of the song Georgia on my Mind.
Limited-edition basketballs were designed live onsite by local pop-culture artist King Pop, most known for illustrating the wildly popular celebrity covers of Rap Snacks. King Pop’s custom designs were showcased onsite and highlighted silhouettes and phrases inspired by the Atlanta Dream.
