Atlanta Dream Advances to WNBA Playoff Semifinals with Win in Washington

The Atlanta Dream is moving on in the WNBA Playoffs.

Despite being outrebounded and with three starters in foul trouble, the Dream used a 13-0 fourth-quarter run to sweep the Washington Mystics 93-75 in its best-of-three series on Wednesday at CareFirst Arena.

“All we cared about was winning and advancing, and everyone did their part,” Dream Head Coach Karl Smesko said.

Atlanta will face New York in the best-of-five semifinals, starting Sunday at State Farm Arena. The Dream will host Games 1, 2 and, if necessary, 5. It will be Atlanta’s first time in the semifinals since 2018.

Wednesday’s win marked Atlanta’s first playoff series triumph since 2016.

Allisha Gray led the Dream with 22 points, followed by Jordin Canada’s 19 points -- 13 in the fourth quarter -- and 11 assists, Rhyne Howard’s 15 points, Angel Reese’s 15, and Naz Hillmon’s 10.

“JC hit a lot of big baskets for us tonight,” Gray said. “She’s really our engine. She played so great for us.”

Washington outrebounded Atlanta 42-27, but the Mystics’ 19 turnovers resulted in 23 Dream points.

Atlanta built a 13-point lead that was cut to six, 41-35, by a Washington run that closed the first half. Atlanta’s poor shooting continued (34.4%), but its excellent defense also continued, turning 11 turnovers into 15 points. It was outrebounded by Washington by 18.

Fouls then started to affect the game.

Reese was called for her third foul with 8:30 remaining in the third quarter and the Dream leading by eight. She picked up her fourth and went to the bench with 6:16 remaining and Atlanta with an eight-point lead.

The Mystics continued attacking inside, while the Dream spread the floor and attempted jump shots for the next few minutes.

Canada went to the bench after she was called for her fourth trying to defend Kiki Iriafen with 3:53 remaining in the quarter and her team leading by 10.

With the Dream spacing the floor, Howard began attacking the basket and completed her own 5-0 run to increase her team’s lead to 15.

Canada returned to the game with 1:43 left after Washington went on an 8-0 run to cut Atlanta’s lead to 63-56. Canada returned to the game.

The foul trouble continued, though.

Howard was called for her fourth foul with 44 seconds remaining and her team ahead by nine. She went to the bench.

Atlanta finished the third leading 65-58, despite Washington closing with a 10-2 run.

Howard and Reese subbed in to start the fourth, and Howard was called for her fifth foul on Washington’s first possession of the quarter. Howard stayed in the game with Atlanta leading by five.

The Mystics cut Atlanta’s lead to three after grabbing two offensive rebounds to keep alive a possession that ended with a layup.

Atlanta didn’t panic, which was an issue last season.

Reese hit a layup, Hillmon scored four points, Reese hit two free throws, Howard hit a long jump shot, and Canada popped a 3-pointer to give Atlanta a 16-point lead with 6:42 left.

“I think last year we would get big leads, and then we would lose them, and then we would lose the game,” Canada said. “And I think this season we really put an emphasis on making sure we're doing the things that we need to do to close out games.”
