Leaving a championship team for a squad that missed the Playoffs can’t be easy, but Renee Montgomery did just that. A two-time WNBA Champion with the Minnesota Lynx, Montgomery decided to take a chance on Nicki Collen and the Atlanta Dream during 2018 Free Agency and it worked out for all parties.
Collen recruited Montgomery for her leadership and ability to knock down the three, which was a major problem for the 2017 Dream team. The 10th-year point guard did not disappoint for her new team. She knocked down a single-season franchise record 78 three-pointers, while starting all 34 games and leading the team to the No. 2 seed entering the WNBA Playoffs and an appearance in the WNBA Semifinals.
Montgomery, who also recorded 125 assists on the season, scored 10.3 points per game, her most points in a season since 2013 for the Connecticut Sun. It was only the second time in her career that she started all 34 games for a squad.
In one of the biggest performances of the season, Montgomery tied a WNBA record for 3-pointers in a game with eight at the New York Liberty on August 12, 2018. She hit seven 3-pointers to break the WNBA record for a half — one more than Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Sami Whitcomb.
Because of her 3-pointer acumen, Montgomery was invited to participate in the 2018 WNBA Three-Point Shooting Contest in Minnesota during halftime of the All-Star Game. Montgomery didn’t win but she showed out in a No. 15 Tiffany Hayes Dream jersey.
Montgomery is not planning to go overseas this offseason.
