With no pick in the first round of the 2018 WNBA Draft, the Atlanta Dream staff wasn’t sure what would happen. A lot of members of the media claimed this was one of the deepest drafts in history and it has turned out they weren’t wrong. With the No. 15 pick (No. 3 in Second Round), the Dream selected forward Monique Billings out of UCLA, which turned out to be a great pick for the organization.
Many mock drafts had Billings going late in the first round so seeing her name still on the board when the Dream selected was a huge win for a franchise that struggled the year before.
Playing 11 minutes a game as a rookie, Billings saw time in 32 games and scored 3.3 points, while grabbing 2.8 rebounds in those contests. Her bursts of energy and athleticism can be seen the minute she stepped on the court.
One would say her most exciting play of the season didn’t event count. With 05.0 seconds left in the half against the Dallas Wings on August 11, Billings stole the ball at midcourt and shot a one-handed three that was just late but extremely athletic. The shot didn’t count but like LaChina Robinson says “That Shot, Oh my.”
The sky is the limit for Billings, who is playing in China during the offseason for Heilongjiang. Follow her progress here.
