Dream Has Block Party at San Antonio

May 15, 2016
The Dream swatted away six shots in Friday's (May 14) 73-63 overtime win at San Antonio.  Sancho Lyttle and Rachel Hollivay led the way with two rejections each. <span style="text-decoration: underline">Postgame Quotes Atlanta Dream Head Coach Michael Cooper: (On the message he gave his team entering overtime…) “You know at that time, especially on the road and you’ve got a team on the ropes, they come and get that game, so in the past that might have deflated us a little bit but that gave us some encouragement knowing that we were right there and we gave up something lucky, which our defense shouldn’t have. In overtime, it was just about coming out and doing the things we had been doing and taking care of the little holes where we let [Jayne] Appel [Marinelli] get open to get that and we were able to get the win.”   (On if he was surprised by the Stars level of composure…) “No. A Dan Hughes team is always coached extremely well and discipline is their main thing. They’ve got a lot of new pieces. I think [Monique] Currie coming in here and [Moriah] Jefferson being a rookie, I think they’re still going to take some time to gel. We were very fortunate to get this one but they’re going to be a team to be reckoned with, not just us but for a lot of teams coming in here and when they go out on the road.”   (On the differences between facing San Antonio in the preseason and tonight…) “Well we’ve got Sancho [Lyttle] and Angel [McCoughtry]. We didn’t have them in preseason and that’s the two biggest things. I think most of the teams we played in the exhibition season everybody had at least their whole team there. We were the only team that was missing 2/5 of our starters, which are very important pieces. But it gave us a chance to look at our young people. Bria Holmes, got a chance to look. Elizabeth Williams a little bit more. Rachel Hollivay got to play, so it gave us the look at some pieces that we knew were going to be role players but be vital role players. You can see the difference now is that when you’ve got your horses there, they’ll come in and get the job done for you.”   (On the atmosphere tonight…) “I thought it was great. I thought it was great for the WNBA. It was great for a home opener. Hopefully it was like that around the league and hopefully it’s like that when we go out on the road. People want to come see us play and then support their home team. We’re just looking to the (WNBA) 20th season to be a big bang and what a way to start it around the whole league as to have this type of crowd and this type of atmosphere and a very close, competitive basketball game.”   (On the Dream bench outscoring the Stars bench 31-8…)  “I was very proud but that was one of the things we wanted to do going in the draft this year was to shorten that area up. We needed people that can come in and score and Meighan Simmons is almost like Vinnie Johnson from the Bad Boy days. She’s a microwave in herself. So when you get those type of points, especially like that and then we get points from the inside in Rachel Hollivay and Bria Holmes who’s a true slasher, it makes for a good offense and makes for where you don’t wear your starters out the whole season.”   Dream Forward Angel McCoughtry: (On tonight’s atmosphere and crowd…) “It was great attendance and a great atmosphere. I was very impressed (with the crowd). Women, we want to play in front of a big crowd too and it makes it more exciting for us to play when we have seats in the stands.”   (On the mood entering overtime…) “There’s no reason to panic. We were upset that they did make that shot at the end (of regulation). But hey, more basketball to me is more fun. We just had to pull it out.”     (On differences between the preseason game against San Antonio and tonight…) “I didn’t play in any of the preseason games so this was actually my first game. I had to get my legs under me a little bit. I missed a couple of big shots but just glad for the second group. They brought the energy in and did a great job.”   (On the Dream second unit outscoring the Stars reserves 31-8…)  “That’s what we need. We need our bench coming off and getting us that energy. Some young legs. That helped us out a lot today.”   (On if the win gives the team a good amount of confidence moving forward…) “We just know we have a lot more work to do. We know we didn’t even play to our best ability. I’m sure the Stars didn’t play to their best ability. Everybody’s new, so I think both teams will get better as we go along.”   Dream Guard Meighan Simmons: (On her WNBA debut being in her hometown…) “It was really important for a lot of the supporters that I had there today. But just to get a win as a professional like this is my first win, so I’m really excited about it. We have a lot of talented people, but outside of the talented people we have a lot of people that work hard and we found our second wind and we got this W. I’m just happy for the experience.”   (On if the Dream second unit can continue putting up performances like tonight…) “Of course. Our coaches expect everybody to just be ready at all times no matter what the situation is. Any time the veterans are out on the floor they expect the bench to be prepared and just keep the tempo going and I think that’s what we did. We played solid defense, got some really good stops and we made some really good shots down the stretch.”   (On the level of calmness she and her teammates showed entering overtime…) “At that moment, I think because we have so many players that believe in what we have and we believe that we were going to win so it was kind of a peaceful moment because we knew that we were going to come back. That five extra minutes was just going to give us that extra oomph. We had the right players out there in overtime, getting stops and hitting good shots. I’m glad we go the W.”   (On whether anyone on her team was concerned entering overtime...) “At that point, of course you’re going to be a little nervous. But all you can do is just continue to play and be mentally focused on the task at hand. Just continue to play hard. Our coaches were saying don’t get discouraged. We’ve got five more minutes. Just keep playing.” (On the atmosphere tonight…) “I loved it, I loved it. It was really fun being back home.”
