1. Tiffany Hayes was a 2nd Round Pick
We might not have a first round pick this year, but remember in 2012 when we drafted Tiffany Hayes as the 14th overall pick? Last season she led the Dream with a career-high 16.3 points per game (13th in the league) and was named Eastern Conference Player of the Month for May. In Hayes’ first year with the league she was named to the 2012 All-Rookie Team, last season she was named a starter of the 2017 Eastern Conference All-Star Team and was also named to the 2017-20 USA National Pool Team.
2. The Talent
The top tier talent of this year’s draft is something you just don’t want to miss out on. A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Mitchell, Diamond DeShields, Azura Stevens, Gabby Williams… and the list just goes on. What team will all the prospects go to? Will there be any unpredicted trades? That’s why you have to tune in to find out (April 12 – 7pm – ESPN2).
3. Watch to See if we Make Moves
The last time we made a major draft move was July 2017 when we traded forward Jordan Hooper and our 2018 First-Round pick to the Chicago Sky for center Imani Boyette, forward Tamera Young and the Sky’s 2018 Second-Round selection. We won’t know until draft night if we’ll make any trades or big roster moves, so yet another reason to watch and stay in the know.
4. Jersey Reveal
It happens every year, the jersey reveal when Lisa presents the jersey to each player on stage. On top of the player’s priceless reactions when their names are called, the jersey reveal is one of the best parts of the draft. It’s that “I did it” feeling all the players have while proudly holding up their new jersey and smiling from ear to ear.
5. New Coaching Staff’s First Draft Together
The 2018 WNBA Draft will be the first draft that our new coaching staff and GM will make decisions together for the draft. Head coach Nicki Collen was hired in October of 2017 and added coach Darius Taylor and coach Mike Petersen in December to close out the year. The new coaches offer a fresh perspective and new strategy with decision making for this year’s draft.
