Dream Acquires Layshia Clarendon from Fever

Atlanta sends rights to 2017 second round draft choice (from New York) to Indiana

ATLANTA (May 10, 2016) — The Atlanta Dream have acquired guard Layshia Clarendon from the Indiana Fever in a trade between the franchises on Tuesday.

In return the Dream sends the rights to the second round selection in the 2017 WNBA Draft it received from the New York Liberty on May 2 in exchange for guard Shoni Schimmel.

“Layshia Clarendon is a proven player in this league and having played with Indiana and she has experience competing in playoff basketball,” Atlanta head coach Michael Cooper said.  “I think she is a good pick up for us.  She is a defensive-minded player that I followed since her college days and have seen her maturation as she has progressed through the WNBA.  For us this was a no-brainer.  She adds depth to our team and is a big guard that can take on some of the stronger guards in the league without help.”

A 5-9 shooting guard out of the University of California, Clarendon was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft by Indiana.  She is entering her fourth WNBA season and appeared in 29 games in 2015 for the Fever, while making 12 starts and averaging 20.8 minutes per contest.

Clarendon posted career-best season averages last season in points (6.7), rebounds (2.7) and assists (2.0) while helping Indiana claim the 2015 Eastern Conference Title and a berth in the 2015 WNBA Finals.

The Dream closes out the preseason tonight against the Los Angeles Sparks at Hank McCamish Pavilion on the campus of Georgia Tech beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

Transaction: Atlanta Dream acquires Layshia Clarendon from the Indiana Fever in exchange for the rights to the 2017 second round draft pick it acquired via the New York Liberty.
