Angel McCoughtry Named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week

ATLANTA, June 3, 2012  Atlantas hot start helped Dream guard/forward Angel McCoughtry earn the first WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week award of the 2013 season, the league office announced Monday.

McCoughtry led the Dream to a 3-0 start to the season, with wins in the season opener against Tulsa followed by road wins against Eastern Conference foes Indiana and Washington. In the three games, McCoughtry averaged 20.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.7 steals.

In the opener against Tulsa on May 25, McCoughtry had 16 points, four boards, four assists and two steals. She followed that performance with a league-best 29 points and nine rebounds to spoil the home opener for the defending WNBA Champion Indiana Fever last Friday.

On Sunday, McCoughtry capped the week by collecting 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals to help Atlanta earn its first 3-0 start to the season since 2010.

For McCoughtry, the Player of the Week award is the eighth such honor of her career and her first of the season.

Los Angeles Sparks center Candace Parker was named the Western Conference Player of the Week.

Other candidates for WNBA Players of the Week were Chicagos Sylvia Fowles, Connecticuts Kara Lawson, New Yorks Cappie Pondexter, and Washingtons Ivory Latta in the East, as well as Minnesotas Maya Moore and Tulsas Glory Johnson in the West.

The two-time Eastern Conference Champion Atlanta Dream are in their sixth season at Philips Arena as part of the Womens National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Dream qualified for the playoffs in each of the past four seasons, including back-to-back conference titles in 2010 and 2011.
