McCoughtry, USA Remain Unbeaten
ATLANTA, Aug. 5, 2012 - The Atlanta Dream's two Olympian players both helped their teams to victory Sunday as pool play came to an end. Angel McCoughtry and Team USA moved to 5-0 with a resounding 114-66 victory over China, while Erika de Souza and Brazil thumped Great Britain, 78-66, for their first victory of the Games.
McCoughtry set a U.S. Olympic record for field goal percentage, making all eight of her field goal attempts while finishing with 16 points. But she did more than just score, as she added six rebounds, six assists and five steals in her 21 minutes of action. The U.S. team, which also includes Dream head coach Marynell Meadors as an assistant coach, tied the U.S. Olympic record for points in a game, and set a new mark with 33 assists.
McCoughtry ended pool play tied for the tournament lead in steals with 14, and led the U.S. with her average of 13.0 points per game. She also ranked third on the team in rebounds (6.2) and was second with five blocks, despite playing the ninth most minutes.
As the No. 1 seed from Group A, the U.S. squad will face Canada (2-3) - the No. 4 seed from Group B - in the quarterfinal round, Tuesday at 9 a.m. ET.
Brazil's tournament came to a close with the victory over Great Britain, as the Brazilians finished fifth in Group B with a 1-4 record, Once again de Souza did her part, scoring 16 points, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out six assists. She shot 7-of-12 from the field and made both free throw attempts, while adding a steal and a blocked shot.
At the conclusion of pool play, de Souza ranked tied for second among all scorers in the tournament, averaging 16.2 points per game, and finished second as well in rebounding, at 8.8 per game.
