McCoughtry, USA Advance to Gold Medal Game
ATLANTA, Aug. 9, 2012 - The Atlanta Dream's Angel McCoughtry and her Team USA teammates will play for the gold medal at the Olympic Games in London after dispatching Australia, 86-73, in Thursday's first semifinal game.
The U.S. squad, which also includes Dream head coach Marynell Meadors as an assistant coach, found itself trailing at halftime for the first time in the Olympic Games, as Australia held a 47-43 lead at intermission. But Team USA outscored Australia 43-26 in the second half to remain undefeated in London, winning its seventh straight game.
McCoughtry, who entered the game tied for the team scoring lead for the tournament despite coming off the bench in every game, played her fewest minutes of the tournament, seeing just under nine minutes of playing time. She still contributed four points on 1-of-3 shooting from the field and 2-of-4 from the free throw line, and added two assists and a steal.
McCoughtry still ranks tied for second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.4 points per game. She is shooting 70.7 percent from the field, making 29-of-41 shots, while averaging 5.1 rebounds and 2.4 steals per contest. Her 17 steals is the most of any player in the tournament.
The United States will play the winner of Thursday night's second semifinal between Russia and France for the gold medal on Saturday. The game is scheduled to tip off at 9 p.m. London time (4 p.m. CT).
