-- Number One Draft Pick Earns Back-to-Back Rookie of the Month Awards --
ATLANTA, September 3, 2009 Dream guard Angel McCoughtry has been named the adidas Rookie of the Month for August, the WNBA announced today. McCoughtry, the top overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft, previously earned Rookie of the Month for games played in July.
In 10 games, McCoughtry led all rookies and the Dream in points per game (17.3), which placed her among the top 10 in the league. She also led all rookies in steals per game (3.4), and ranked third in rebounds per game (3.4) and assists per game (2.4). McCoughtry scored a career-high 34 points in a 93-87 win over San Antonio. Over the month, she helped the Dream to a 6-4 record and scored in double digits in each game, including three outings in which she racked up 20 or more points.
McCoughtry has added depth to an Atlanta team that finished its inaugural season with only four wins. The Dream currently holds the second place spot in the Eastern Conference with a 16-14 record and is on the verge of their first playoff berth. McCoughtry has scored double digits in 21 of 30 games to date this season, and currently ranks sixth in the league in steals per game (2.2).
Below are the highlights of McCoughtrys outstanding month:
